Popular

When did my son get so freaking popular?

I've barely had time to devote to blogging lately because I've been busy either A) chauffeuring him to his activities or B) attending some mom's meeting for an activity he is about to join...

Yesterday, we had lunch with a lovely and delightful new mommy and baby friend from Gymboree. The mom was telling us all about the wonderful summer amenities that her town offers; as in five different pools and a water spray park for the kids...and how we totally need to spend every day of summer with them! Hells yeah, baby!

New in town and eager to make new friends, she also asked if I wanted to get together during the week (outside of Gymboree)...
Sure, why not.

When I got into my car, I started thinking about what day of the week we should get together... with two playgroups, Mom's Morning Out, and Gymboree, that leaves Mondays... Yikes!

My son also seems to make friends everywhere he goes. Today, at Target an elderly man riding an electric scooter stopped by our cart to to talk to him. My son smiled back, probably thinking to himself, "Hey, you have to ride in the cart too. Cool!"

The man promptly handed me a dollar and said, "This is for ice cream for the boy. You hear me? Not for Mommy's purse. It's for ice cream for the boy." Then, he bid my son a cheery good-bye and rode off.

I wish strangers would randomly give me ice cream money...

At the grocery store, the regular cashiers and stockers usually stop to talk to us. They never look me in the eye (or in the boobs, either). All eyes are on my son. They stop to coo at him, ask him how he's doing, etc... while I get a pithy, "oh, hey" or worse, "I remember your husband used to bring him grocery shopping. How is he doing? Did he get that job?"*

This evening at dinner, a waitress stopped by to compliment my son on his new haircut. We had been in that restaurant a few times before, so I'm not surprised she recognized us. The fact that she remembered him well enough to notice his hair style, yet forgot half my order was a bit off-putting...

Despite the way it sounds, I do make a conscious effort to keep my son's schedule light and our outings relatively brief. I set up his activities for the morning and take him home for his lunch and nap. I let him spend the rest of his afternoons either playing with his toys or at the park, alone and at his leisure. A boy needs his down time, after all... especially with such an adoring public demanding so much of his time and smiles. Being cute is hard work.

We also have our projects. Our newest one is to spent next few weeks (or until it gets too hot...) trying out every park in our town. According to the map, there are about 36 of them- some have playground, some have walking trails, some ponds... I even developed a ranking system based on my son's enjoyment and its overall pleasantness. So far, we've found one that we like alot. It has a duck pond, a climbing wall, and baby swings. What's there not to love?

We like to stay busy and active in the world...Rather, HE does. Mommy's social life isn't quite as exciting as it once was... It's sad. I know.

* My husband was a stay at home dad for a brief period of time when he was between jobs and I was attempting to be a working mom. He occasionally did the grocery shopping, but only when asked and only with a very specific list. Otherwise, he has a tendency to come home things like dried shitake mushrooms and soda, but no vegetables or meat.
