We had to get home to relieve the grandparents from sitter duty. Although we had agreed to be home by 9, I called my folks to request "Mom, just a little later... please???" and didn't that take me back.
I'm so SPOILED. I know it. After all, this is was other parents that hire sitters do all the time. Fortunately, my parents are eager and willing to help out anytime (for FREE) and even insist that our son stay overnight at their house. I was hesitant at first, but have certainly grown to LOVE it.
My husband and I get a night out. My parents get to spend lots of time with their beloved grandson and our son has an opportunity to bond with them. WIN-WIN-WIN.
This time, due to a special circumstance, my parents opted to come to our house, but asked that we come home early so they could get home at a respectable hour. Fair enough.
Unfortunately that meant leaving just as we were enjoying ourselves... and the margaritas. Boy, did I need one (or three) after the week I had!
On Wednesday, our power and phone lines went out in the middle of dinner. There was a terrible storm blowing and pitch black outside and tornado sirens had been going off all day. Having to decide whether to continue feeding my son or run and hide in the closet with him, we both started to panic...
Poor kid was terrified by the thundering and darkness. I, on the other hand, feverishly gathered every candle in the house, which was not very many since we stopped buying them when we had to baby proof and "Oh no, do we even have matches or a lighter anymore..."
With my half-charged cell phone as my only mode of communication (possibly for the rest of the night), I called my husband. The power was out at his office too and he plans to be home right away, except, wait... duh! that the electric gate that keeps everyone's cars nice and safe won't open and apparently, someone stole the emergency crank...
So while he and his cohorts searched for a wrench or screwdriver to unhinge the gate, I had to give my son a bath and get him ready for bed by candlelight-- not as fun as it sounds. Then, sit in the dark alone until my husband could come home. Fortunately, the power came back later that same night (half way through LOST- shaking fist) and other than part of our fence falling over, we emerged unscathed. No tornados.
The rest of the week was busy and filled with minor (unblog-worthy) irritations. I was so exhusted and wasn't even looking forward to this party, but turns out really needed a night out... and a break!
Well, on the bright side... I finally get to chance blog. Ole!
