One of my friends got bent out of shape about it, pouted, and said she didn't like hearing that...
"What? That people can be fake?"Classic denial. Last I heard, she was booking a baby-sitter and planning to reconnect with her inner "urbanite" with a night of martinis downtown. I'm hardly opposed to martinis downtown. I just to prefer having them while I blog... at home... in my jammies.
"No, that we live in the... suburbs."
"Well, we do."

Unlike the Native Americans and the rainforest, my "single self" was certainly NOT a way of life worth preserving and judging from the stories these friends like to swill over cocktails, neither were theirs.... Trust me.
We continued chatting about someone's upcoming trip to London and another one's vacation to the family beach house. We gossiped about each other's neighbors, talked about "mommy things", of course, and even planned a girls' getaway for ourselves.
As one of them detailed her recent (and as she noted, pricey) kitchen remodel, and the next mentioned having someone paint a MURAL on the ceiling of her son's "big boy room", it was quite obvious that these ladies weren't exactly lacking for excitement in the "boring 'burbs".
So, what exactly is it about living in the suburbs that makes it so uncool? Because it sounds pretty sweet to me.

You have to drive everywhere, the food is all the same and bland, and everyone seems to be unfun. But since we moved to the 'burbs after growing up in the city of Chicago, I'm trying to make the suburbs more fun. Or, at least trying to find city transplants to hang out with. I found you on cre8buzz btw.
I say just give over to it. The city is fun, but the burbs are home.

I have never lived in the burbs, so I can't say anything about it. I started on a farm and moved to the big city. Two babies and a townhome later, Husband and I are going to stay in the city...it would be nice to have a yard;)
It is all the Big Smoke after growing up in rural areas and going to schools with less than 25 kids in the whole school!!
It is what it is. To each their own.
We have lived in San Fran, NYC and Boston and now live in the Burbs. And I love it. I love having a big yard and a safe neighborhood.
I so get this post.
Based on these wonderful comments and some e-mails, it seems that one's attitude about the suburbs is greatly determined by which city they live in/ closest too. Seems like there's a bigger separation between the "city" and the 'burbs in some place.
I, however, live in the Dallas area where every five blocks is basically the same and we drive into Dallas proper all the time. We have to drive everywhere any way...
Living in the suburbs is really kind of nice for me.
Anyway, thanks for all the great input!
Oh yes, I'd like to pretend that I still live in LA, but we moved to a small town with a Target in CA's Central Valley...the truth is, I'm now a Soccer Mom in training.
