What's so great about Cookie Monster?

"LOOK, it's COOKIE MONSTER... and, um... two pumpkins!"

"Cookie Monster! That's sooooo cute! Isn't that adorable? Oh and the pumpkins are nice too"

"COOKIE MONSTER!"

...or so was the general outcry during this evening's pillaging of the townsfolk (i.e. trick-or-treating)

In case, you haven't guessed by the title of this post, my son was NOT the Cookie Monster. He was a pumpkin... but a very wonderful one at that!

Our friends live in a tony little planned community which I affectionately call "Stepford". With its manicured laws and bleached smiles for miles, the name is quite appropriate. Although my neighborhood does it up in style for Halloween, my son and I would have been trick-or-treating on our own, versus going with a group at theirs.

This was my son's very first time trick-or-treating, and leading up to the BIG DAY, I could only imagine the nightmare of having to single-handedly juggle sippy cup, flashlight, basket of candy, toddler, and camera... No thanks. Three mommies handling three toddlers seemed a lot better than going solo again.

"Wouldn't it be cute if they both dressed up as pumpkins?" my friend asked a few week ago.

"But, I want him to be a bee... hmm, we'll see."

So why all the frivolousness of two costumes for one child? I just so happened to have found a bee costume and a pumpkin costume at a second hand store and all for under $10 for both. I was sold. We would go as a pumpkin patch! Huhzzah! Apparently, not everyone got the memo... ahem, Cookie Monster.

We piled all of the kids in our big red wagon, helped them out of it at every single house, escorted them to the door, cued them with their "trick-or-treat's" and "thank you's", then took turns pulling the whole load to the next house. My son and his pals had a great time!

As for me.... My back hurts. My feet hurt, and I'm exhausted, but what was my reward for all this toil and trouble? Why a bucket full of goodies won by my son's cuteness and charm!! Oh, and a hyper, out-of-control child who was up way too late partying with his friends...

This must be what it's like to be a mom to a child star... Uh, maybe not quite.

Happy Halloween.
